Agency expects WV Turnpike toll revenue to rise

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON (AP) — Following a series of declines, traffic on the West Virginia Turnpike is increasing.

Figures from the West Virginia Parkways Authority show toll revenue for the first five months of 2012 is about 3.9 percent higher than in the same period last year. Toll revenue in December 2011 was 6.3 percent higher than in December 2010.

The improvement follows declines between November 2010 and November 2011.

The trend is expected to continue. Media outlets report that the authority approved a budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 that projects a 3 percent increase in toll revenue.

General Manager Greg Barr says turnpike traffic for the Memorial Day holiday weekend was 4 percent higher than in 2011.
