Senator Jay Rockefeller Talks 'Farm Bill' In Charleston

CHARLESTON -

On Friday, Senator Jay Rockefeller visited West Virginia's Capitol to talk about fighting childhood hunger.

He hosted a roundtable discussion with people in the community at the Manna Meal Soup Kitchen.

Rockefeller said Congress is considering a Farm Bill that would give more money to summer food programs that'll feed hungry children who are out of school.

He said more than 200,000 children get free and reduced lunches, but only a fraction are served by summer food programs.

"When the summer comes and school gets out and they can't get any free school lunch program, what do they do? There's only 16,000 of those 200,000 plus thousand who are affected in some way in the summer. What are we going to do with them?" he said.

Rockefeller said there will be more money to fund summer food programs if the Farm Bill passes.
