Posted: Updated:

Taking aspirin before heart surgery can head off a serious post-operative complication.

Researchers at Thomas Jefferson University found that taking aspirin for five days before surgery reduces the risk of acute kidney failure.

The study looked at patients undergoing heart bypass or valve surgery.

Those taking aspirin were 50-percent less likely to suffer kidney failure.
