A pair of fire departments responded to a fire that occurred at a home in Fireco on Sunday night.

Firefighters from Sophia Area and Coal City Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the call on Fire Creek Road at around 10:30 p.m.  While working the fire, firefighters said they heard a whimpering from inside the single wide trailer.  While no one was home, they were able to recover a golden retriever and save the dog from the fire.

Firefighter Jenna Bishop called an area veterinarian who came out to treat the dog overnight.  The dog suffered smoke inhalation and had to be given oxygen at the scene by Jan Care ambulance EMTs.

Members of the Raleigh County Animal Rescue said the dog is receiving care.  The owners have been notified, but RCAR members tell 59News that if the owners don't want the dog, Firefighter Bishop has agreed to foster the dog until a home can be found.

Bishop said that it is likely the dog will be in the care of the veterinarian for a while.
