PRINCETON -
The governments May job report shows seasonal and temporary jobs are on the rise, making it easier for teens and college students to find work during their summer break.
"I think I am going to stay working here throughout my college days and until I begin my career," Shavonne Graham of Oakvale said.
Graham plans on attending Bluefield State College in the fall and hopes to keep this seasonal job so she can continue working during her summer vacations. But landing this summer job was no easy task.
"It is very hard when you are just a teenager especially for your first job because a lot of people don't want to hire you unless you have work experience," Graham continued.
Lacking experience is not a deal breaker. Charles Peck with the Academy of Career and Technology said inexperienced job seekers can still get that summer job by demonstrating a solid work ethic.
"You have to show you have a great attitude and great employability skills and one of the things I hear all the time is that you must come to work every day and you must be on time," Peck continued.
Peck said when looking for a summer position: think outside! He says the warmer weather brings about different kinds of opportunities that can even be found in your backyard.
Right now you can always find local employment in a lot of yard work and landscaping. That is always real common and a lot of our hardware and lumber stores are booming right now in the summer time," Peck said.
Before I became a reporter one of my favorite summer jobs was serving up ice cream, a sweet seasonal job that tastes great and can help you pay the bills.
