MADISON (AP) -
Hundreds of Boone County residents who blame coal companies for contaminating their water supplies have settled their lawsuit against Massey Energy.
A trial in Madison was set to begin Tuesday, but a court official confirmed that Circuit Judge William Thompson halted the proceedings so language in the settlement could be finalized.
Massey and the four subsidiaries involved are now owned by Virginia-based Alpha Natural Resources.
Alpha spokesman Ted Pile confirmed the deal but said terms are confidential.
Thompson had consolidated 155 medical monitoring lawsuits involving about 350 people.
Residents of Seth and Prenter say mining activities, including the underground injection of coal slurry, are to blame for discolored, foul-smelling well water and health problems.
The plaintiffs are now served by public water lines and don't use their wells for consumption.
