Williamsburg Prepares for a Lively Weekend

WILLIAMSBURG -

Williamsburg may only have a few hundred residents, but they are preparing to welcome thousands of visitors for the three-day Badlands Bluegrass Festival.

The festival was organized to support the restoration of a historic Williamsburg landmark from the 1700's, the McCoy Fort.

"It is a historic project that needs to be worked on and needs a lot of financing and we're trying to raise money by having a music festival," said Carolyn Stephens, festival promoter.

An open field for camping is available and at least 20 bluegrass bands will be at Poor Farm this weekend to entertain people of all ages.

"The Badlands Bluegrass Festival is family friendly because it is Bluegrass. Bluegrass is family music and we really look forward to having a lot of young families and maybe even a few grandparents attend the same festival together," said Stephens.

Another highlight in the town on Saturday is the West Virginia birthday celebration at the Williamsburg District Historical Foundation, which celebrates the history and the birthday of the mountain state.

"This is our main fundraiser for the year and we've been having it since 1998 and we really try to preserve history," said Cassandria Perkins, a volunteer at the Williamsburg District Historical Foundation.

The birthday celebration highlights history exhibits, a flag raising ceremony and Indian rituals.

Williamsburg may be small, but visitors have a lot to see.

"This part of Greenbrier County is a little bit off the main road and I think people will be very pleased when they come out here and see the windmills and the valleys and the farms here because not many people come through this area," said Stephens.

Tickets can be purchased at Poor Farm on Williamsburg Road for $55.
