Anderson's Corner offers everything from wine to jewelry

By MARLA PISCIOTTA For The State Journal

ROMNEY — With all manner of West Virginia made products in every nook and cranny of Anderson's Corner, a visitor surely won't leave emptied handed.

Anderson's is nestled in the middle of Romney across from Literary Hall and catty-cornered to the historic Hampshire County Courthouse.

The store is located in a federal-style building constructed before the Civil War as a meat market and is most definitely a part of the landscape of the city.

Patty Anderson and her late husband, Bill, opened the business when he retired. It has been in the same location for the past 30 years.

Anderson prides herself in offering the store as a place where area artisans can sell their wares, authors can sign books and musicians can host gatherings.

"We have glass blowing, potters throwing pots, stained-glass artists and, from time to time, musicians that come to entertain shoppers," said Anderson.

The store is part of the annual Gourmet Tour of Romney.

Anderson touts her wine collection with a special wine tasting.

"I have a wine tasting license," said Anderson. "It's very important to taste wine before buying it."

Her wines come from six different wineries in the region with names like Mount Betty blackberry, and Raspberry Royale.

A selection of food from Romney's Gourmet Central is soldiered on antique shelves in one area of the store. Anderson said she makes sure visitors get a taste of Gourmet's offerings with her wine and cheese.

Vignettes of goods for sale are throughout the store. On one shelf, Anderson displays lighted stained-glass nightlights made from local artisan Michael O'Brien. Another shelf features hand-blown glass pieces by Ron Hinkle from Buckhannan.

Her son Michael offers print making the old fashioned way by cutting wood and linoleum for prints. Michael also is the store's web designer.

Local artist Nancy Judd painted all the floral decorations on an antique display cabinet, which houses even more local art.

The late Janet Harlow designed the Anderson's Corner pen and ink logo.

But artisan-made gifts are only a part of what Anderson's Corner offers. The business has a complete line of gold jewelry, diamond rings, chains and bracelets, "all with West Virginia prices," said Anderson. And one area of the store is dedicated to selling estate jewelry.

Tim Anderson, a custom jeweler, designs and repairs jewelry in the store.

But visitors don't have to travel to Romney to get a feel of what Anderson's Corner offers. The store also has a satellite location in Moorefield.

Anderson said she is looking forward to the Hampshire County Studio Tour held the first weekend in December. Her store will feature three local artists.

Regardless of the season, it isn't out of the ordinary to see a few people chatting and relaxing on the bench along the entrance wall and having Patty offer them a taste of wine.

That's the atmosphere at Anderson's Corner. The entire community is considered a part of her family.
