Many people are stepping up to be heroes in their communities.

Dozens of residents rolled up their sleeves during a blood drive at Coal City Elementary School Wednesday.

It's all part of the Americorps Energy Express program. Elementary students are mentored by college students during the summer.

Organizers also held a food drive at the event.

According to its website, Energy Express is a summer program promoting the school success of children living in rural and low-income communities across West Virginia.
