While many of America's top athletes have been busy preparing for the London Olympics that kick off late in July, one McDowell County man has already brought home the gold.

Stephen Hudson took top honors in weightlifting at the 32nd annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games – the largest annual wheelchair sports competition in the world.

Mr. Hudson says that it's rewarding to have a gold medal around his neck, but he's already looking forward to defending his title next year.

"I'm just eager to compete again, you know? I had a lot of fun, met a lot of people," said Hudson.

Hudson won that medal with a final lift of 150 pounds, which smashed the state record he set earlier this year in Charleston, where he also took top honors in discus, javelin and shot put.
