Relay For Life Raises Money For Cancer Research

Posted: Updated:

Friends, family, and survivors walk to support potentially lifesaving treatment at the Relay for Life at Crossroads Mall in Mount Hope on Friday.

Money raised will benefit the American Cancer Society, an organization dedicated to preventing, treating, and ending cancer, said organizer Carrie Lawrence.

"Everyone knows someone that's been affected by cancer, whether it's a friend, a family member, or even themselves. That's why we're here every year to do relay so we can support all the cancer survivors, remember the ones that are no longer with us, and fight against it," Lawrence added.

Sarah Robertson is walking for her brother, who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2001. Eleven years and several surgeries later, he is walking with her on Friday for the survivors.

"I want to honor my brother. We want to help fight it. We want people to know they have options. They have a support system, someone they can come to and lean on when they need to," said Robertson.

To those navigating the stormy seas of cancer, Robertson said the American Cancer Society is an anchor for those dealing with everything from chemotherapy to hair loss.

"When we provide them with wigs, women that can't afford it, husbands that just don't know what to do to help their wives. When they come and leave a different person. It's a good feeling to know we've helped them," added Robertson.

The Relay for Life begins at 7p.m.
