CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -
One West Virginia fishing store has already closed, and owners of other sporting good shops in southern West Virginia wonder how they'll compete when Cabela's opens near Charleston Aug. 9.
The Charleston Gazette says the 80,000-square-foot store could threaten small shops.
Joe Lewis closed On The Fly in St. Albans because Cabela's carries many of the same brands and sells them cheaper.
Addington's Bowhunter Shop expects to lose sales on small items such as deer lures. But owner Frank Addington hopes his merchandise and 35 years of experience will keep customers coming.
At Spring Hill Rod and Gun, Dan Kessel believes his staff's expertise will also make a difference.
He says his customers are loyal, and Cabela's might even help his business by drawing new people to the area.
