CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -

West Virginia Rep. Shelley Moore Capito has been named to a bipartisan panel charged with reconciling differences between House and Senate versions of the Violence Against Women Act.

The 1994 law historically has enjoyed bipartisan support. This year, however, with the presidency and congressional majorities at stake and female voters a pivotal constituency, it's become the latest vehicle for gender politicking.

Democrats have said changes proposed by the GOP are the latest shot in what they say is the party's "war against women."

Republican Capito announced her appointment on Monday. She said the act is critical to ending domestic violence.
