WV Medal of Honor recipient named to council

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -

West Virginia's last surviving Medal of Honor recipient has been appointed to the state's Veterans' Council.

Hershel Woodrow "Woody" Williams' appointment was announced Monday by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin. The appointment is effective immediately.

Williams served in the Marine Corps. He received a Purple Heart after being wounded at Iwo Jima on March 6, 1945. That same year, in October, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman.

Tomblin said Williams "embodies patriotism and honor" and has been an advocate for veterans.

West Virginia has the nation's 9th-largest percentage of veterans in its population, according to 2010 figures.
