CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -

West Virginia will receive nearly $53,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to cover fees charged to low-income students who take Advanced Placement tests.

It is part of $21.5 million in grants announced Wednesday to 43 states. The funding is expected to pay up to $38 per Advanced Placement exam for as many as three exams per student.

Federal education officials say the program is intended to encourage low-income students to take the tests, obtain college credit for high school courses, and reduce the cost and time and required to complete a postsecondary degree.

Funding levels per state were determined on state estimates of the number of tests taken by low-income students.
