A coal train derailed in the town of Raleigh Thursday afternoon.

CSX officials said the train had four locomotives and 75 freight cars carrying coal.

Six of those cars derailed and coal spilled into the creek in the area.

It happened just after 2 p.m. near Burmeister Avenue.

That's right behind the Raleigh Post Office.

Aaron Pugh, of Raleigh County, was playing basketball with friends when the cars flew off the tracks.

"I was coming down from catching a ball and I looked up and saw the train collapsing," Pugh said. "I just started screaming. We all turned around and saw it just started to fall."

The accident is also affecting traffic on Raleigh Ridge Road, but so far, there is no indication that it is affecting traffic on Route 19.

Crews were on scene for hours working to clean up the creek and roadways.
