FAYETTEVILLE -
Adventures on the Gorge will belatedly celebrate the Fourth of July with a special fireworks display over the New River Gorge on Saturday, Aug. 4.
The fireworks will be shot from the Ames Height's campus of the outdoor recreation resort beginning at 9:30 p.m. The display was originally planned for July 7 and was postponed because of the heavy storms that tore through West Virginia in late June. In addition to watching the display at the resort, guests have an option of viewing them from the New River Gorge Bridge catwalk.
"We are offering a special twilight BridgeWalk for our adventurous guests," said Dave Arnold, managing partner. "Both places are great vantage points for seeing the display over the New River, but we think the BridgeWalk view will be quite special, especially since a full moon will cast an incredible shadow on the canyon wall."
The BridgeWalk fireworks option will begin at 8:15 p.m., when guests will gather at the site to be briefed and readied for the walk to the center of the bridge's catwalk. There, they will have a clear view of the fireworks display.
"With our rafting and aerial adventures in full swing, we have plenty for guests to do during the day on Saturday and Sunday," Arnold said. "The recent rains mean great rafting on both the New and Gauley rivers, so anyone who would like to make a day trip or plan an overnight excursion could enjoy summer whitewater rafting at its best."
Guests at the Adventures on the Gorge campus also will be able to enjoy the new bi-level Canyon Falls swimming pool. The 3,000 square-foot swimming pool features two levels separated by a two-foot drop over natural sandstone an a zero-entry section for groups with young children.
The cost for the evening walk will be $70 per person, plus taxes. Reservations may be made on a first-come, first-served basis by calling 877-237-4939 or visiting info@onthegorge.com.
The New River Gorge Challenge Weekend will take place Aug. 4 -5 at locations in Thurmond and Fayetteville. Events include 28.5 miles of extreme whitewater, mountain biking and running. Aug. 5 features the Thurmond Triathlon, a family friendly beginner triathlon.
