BLUEFIELD -
Approximately 2 years ago, the parking garage on Scott
Street in Downtown Bluefield was closed due to
structural concerns, but now residents of the city can finally see progress
being made in the area.
Demolition of the old parking garage started Monday morning –
the first step in a long-term project that could add approximately 86 new
parking spaces in the area.
Although many residents were unhappy when the garage closed
down, Interim City Manager Brian Cochran says the city had little choice.
"A lot of people didn't want it to come down at all," said
Cochran, "but once you review the testing and see….it basically comes down to a
safety issue."
Once demolition of the old garage is complete, Cochran says
that a retaining wall will be put up, along with about eighty-five new parking
spaces.
He expects the project to be finished by the end of the year
