A Raleigh County Airport Paves the Way

Posted: Updated:

The Beckley-Raleigh County Memorial Airport received $400,000 from the West Virginia State Department's Industrial Access Road Fund. The money will be used to finish paving a second road to enter and exit the airport.

The bid for the work will go out in 30 to 45 days. The route will start at Industrial Park Road and wrap around the airport.

Airport Manager, Tom Cochran, calls the road expansion an opportunity to save the community and Southern West Virginia.

Cochran along with U.S. Representative Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) call the access road important to be completed well before the Boy Scout Jamboree in 2013.

"The airport authority has already had inquires from the Boy Scout families to know what the amenities are around the airport...So this helps us to answer those questions and show these families what the future of the area holds," said Rahall who is said to be instrumental in getting the funding for the airport.

Beckley Mayor Emmett Pugh was in attendance at Tuesday's announcement and said the road will open up more opportunities for businesses along the new access road.

The paving for the access road is expected to be completed sometime in October 2012.
