In the last year Trading Places has taken Lauren Weppler and 59News photographers Phillip Copney, Patrick Williams, and DJ McNamee all over southern West Virginia trying out more than 40 jobs, but no job was as tough as being apart of the Beckley Area Derby Dames.
"The last time I was on skates, I think I was good?" Weppler hasn't skated since the age of 12, but now she is attempting to perform like the Derby Dames do.
The team of about 20 practice three times a week to bout area teams. Weppler first was taught to fall from the head coach who goes by "Cupcake Cadaver."
"Let the pads, work for you," Cupcake told Weppler who fell on both knees, one knee and on all fours.
For Cupcake being part of the group got her out of a rough time, "you can have a day job that no one knows about and then you come here and you're a completely different person. Your name says exactly who you are. I'm cupcake cadaver because I'm sweet and deadly."
Cupcake put Weppler and the other Derby Dames through a set of falling and packing drills.
Burn N Kell is also apart of Derby Dames and had some words of encouragement for Weppler who was just starting out, "I think you did pretty well. We would call you fresh meat because your brand new on skates and your new to our drills, but I tell you, you fell like a champ just like we would."
Beckley Area Derby Dames take on Greenbrier Valley Vixen's September 8th at the Beckley Raleigh County Convention Center.
A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit a local women's resource center.
