Princeton Police Officer Under Review for Fight with Lover

PRINCETON -

A Princeton police officer is under review after police say a domestic situation was taken too far.

Prosecutor Scott Ash said almost 2 months ago, Sergeant Mary Beth Gergely confronted her lover by pulling over her car, detaining her and bringing her back to the Princeton Police station.

Inside of the station, the two got into a heated argument. This all reportedly took place while Gergley was in uniform and on the clock.

"It was an inappropriate place for an argument and apparently if you pull someone over for something other than the purpose of law enforcement it is wrong," Scott Ash, Mercer County Prosecutor said.

Ash has called for an investigation. He said it will take state police several weeks to review the case.

"What I am looking for is if there is any criminal matters in this personnel matters are for the city of Princeton only not this office," Ash continued.

And right now, that is all the Princeton Police Department is calling this, a personnel issue. The Princeton Police Chief would not speak with us because he said this is an open investigation.

So we took the streets to hear you thoughts about this case.

"She was taking advantage of her power," Eddie Dickerson of Princeton said.

"No matter who you are cop or no cop, you personal life should be left personal," Kimberly Whitlow Princeton said.

State Police will determine in a few weeks if Sergeant Gergely will face the courts or the police department for punishment. She is currently on administrative leave.
