BLUEFIELD, Va. -

The following is a press release from Bluefield College:

Bluefield College will host a football promotional night with the Bluefield Blue Jays, Monday, August 20, featuring an introduction to the community of the first football players at BC since 1941.

After nearly two decades of competition in the sport from 1922 to 1941, Bluefield College gave up its football program shortly after the start of World War II, since most of the school's male student-athletes were off fighting the war. The program remained dormant until last fall when a new Rams football team took the field for an exhibition season. This fall, the revived squad will play the school's first official intercollegiate schedule in more than 70 years, starting with a home opener on Saturday, August 25 at Mitchell Stadium.

Before that, the college will introduce the new football Rams to the community, Monday, August 20, when the Bluefield Blue Jays battle the Pulaski Mariners in a double-header at Bowen Field. The first Blue Jays game will begin at 5:00 p.m.

The gate for the baseball double-header will open at 4:00 p.m. with the first 200 fans receiving a free Bluefield College football t-shirt. Other BC prizes, including a mini football helmet, Rams football apparel and season tickets to BC football games, will be awarded throughout the evening to lucky ticket holders.

BC football players and coaches will be on hand to greet fans and to distribute prizes and other promotional material. In addition, a member of the Rams football squad will throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the game, and BC music students will offer the evening's national anthem.

Fans are invited to come out to Bowen Field to cheer on the Blue Jays, to meet the new Rams, and to take home free BC football gear. Locals are also encouraged to catch the Rams in their season opener against the University of Pikeville at 1 p.m. on August 25 at Mitchell Stadium.
