Raleigh County School Zone Safety Enforcement Begins

RALEIGH -

As the school year kicks off in Raleigh County this Friday drivers are reminded they have a responsibility to look out for school children who may not be looking out for you.

From 55 to 15 miles per hour, drivers have been enjoying the maximum speed limit. But in Raleigh county on Friday all that will change.

With buses making frequent traffic stops and significantly lower speed limits drivers will have to factor extra time for their morning commute.

"So we have the worst of all things. we have a reduced speed limit we have a new change in the traffic patterns and we have more traffic on the road and in all of this chaos we have our children. so that is why we are going to be enforcing giving zero tolerance, "Steve Tanner, Raleigh County Sheriff said.

And law enforcement officials aren't the only ones concerned with busy commuters.

Parents who spoke with 59 News when it comes to school zones, they see way too many speedy drivers breaking the law.

"We've watched the speed or go right around the bus it is a concern," Lisa Meadows, Shady Spring said.

"A lot of them speed right on through and a lot of them pass the school bus when the stop sign is out because they don't want to get stuck in traffic," Heather Farthing, mother of 4 said.

So before you buckle up and hit the road on Friday morning, drivers are encouraged to leave early, be patient and obey the speed limits. Officers will be on the look out all week to give speeding drivers a ticket.

The Raleigh County Sheriff's Department has been given a highway safety grant to crack down on those who disobey the school zone speed limit.

They will be on patrol this Friday and Monday outside of many schools in Raleigh County.

Their message is simple: SLOW DOWN.
