Charleston woman arraigned on bank embezzlement charges

A woman accused of embezzling more than $100,000 from a credit union was arraigned  Wednesday in Kanawha County.

Heather Laake has been charged with bank embezzlement, credit union fraud and financial exploitation of the elderly.

Prosecutors said Laake abused her powers when she worked at the South Charleston Employees Federal Credit Union.

They said she stole money from customers accounts and changed their account information so they wouldn't notice that money was missing.

Her boyfriend at the time, Dewayne Spaulding, is also facing the same charges, according to prosecutors. He didn't appear in court, so the judge issued a capias for his arrest.

Laake is set to go to trial Oct. 22.
