BECKLEY -

Back to school season means a lot of changes: New teachers, new clothes, classmates and backpacks, but one of the most important changes can be easy to overlook: New sleep schedules.

Children who don't get enough sleep at night can under-perform at school, and even show signs of hyperactive behavior to keep themselves awake.

Experts say that one of the best ways to get enough sleep at night is to set up a regular schedule.

"Yes, some kind of schedule to keep going, because the body gets to a cycle," said Dr. Carlos Lucero, Pediatrician. "If you have a regular time to go to sleep, yes, it is better because then it's automatic."

Lucero says that younger children need 8-10 hours of sleep every night, and even though students in their teens can get by with a little less than that, everyone – adults included – should try to get at least 8 hours of sleep per night.
