Anesthesia's Lasting Effects

Posted: Updated:

New research shows children exposed to anesthesia even once before the age of three had an increased risk for long-term problems with language and reasoning skills.

The study analyzed more than 2,600 children in Australia more than three hundred of them were exposed to anesthesia before the age of 3.

The type of anesthetic likely used on the children in the 80's and 90's is no longer available, but the researchers said other anesthetics that were tested on animals have similar effects.
