Dead Man Tapped for Jury Duty, Twice

PRINCETON -

The widow of the late Delegate Thomas Michael Porter says she has received notices for him to appear for jury duty twice since he died in 2010.

Ruth Porter of Princeton is calling for changes in the way jury pools are selected.

She tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph she asked officials at the Mercer County Courthouse to remove her late husband's name from the jury pool. But they told her they can't.

The state Supreme Court provides the names of registered voters and licensed drivers to the counties for jury pools.

Supreme Court spokeswoman Jennifer Bundy says the only way to stop receiving the notices is to ask the Department of Motor Vehicles and the voter's registration office to remove the person's name from their lists.
