West Virginia kicker looking to rebound in 2012

CHARLESTON (AP) -

Kicking a football is much like hitting a golf ball, shooting a free throw or trying to throw a strike. Being off by a fraction can make a difference, and no one at West Virginia knows that better than Corey Smith.

His struggles on punts and kickoffs were part of a lackluster year for the Mountaineers' special teams in 2011.

The senior has won back the right to handle the duties again. Smith is trying to narrow his focus so he can be ready to contribute the right way to No. 11 West Virginia's debut season in the Big 12. He says consistency is key at this level.

West Virginia opens play on Saturday at home against Marshall.
