LEWISBURG -
The Greenbrier Valley is known for having problems with rabies in its raccoon and skunk population.
That's why biologists with Wildlife Services say the area was selected to be part of a study for a new rabies vaccination.
The valley was sprayed with the vaccine last year and on Tuesday planes flew over the area again for another round of vaccinations.
Why is this vaccination so important?
Wildlife Biologist John Houben said, "It's nearly 100% fatal should a human contract it so unlike a lot of other wildlife diseases, it has a large human dimension to it so we are trying to protect the publics health."
So far this year only one skunk has tested positive for rabies in the Greenbrier Valley.
And that skunk was found outside the area that received the vaccine.
