GREEN BANK -

Astronomy buffs and others concerned by the possible closure of the Green Bank telescope can now sign a petition to help save the landmark.

The National Science Foundation's Division of Astronomical Sciences Portfolio Review Committee recommended in a report last month that the telescope's funding be discontinued, but the Greenbrier Valley Economic Development Corporation has set up a website (http://www.savethegbt.org/) to keep that from happening.

According to a news release from the corporation, the website's mission is to prevent the closure of the National Astronomy Radio site in Green Bank and preserve the operation and use for national science of the Green Bank telescope.

"The positive impact the NARO and the GBT has on Pocahontas County, the Greenbrier Valley and the state of West Virginia cannot be overstated," said Stephen Weir, the executive director of the Greenbrier Valley Economic Development Corporation. "Not only is this a state-of-the-art research facility, it is an educational asset and a primary economic development driver. We cannot lose the GBT."

The website provides information and links to information and links to information about the Green Bank facility, its mission, history and accomplishments, as well as what interested parties can do to help preserve funding.

The portfolio review committee also recommended the NSF divest from the Very Long Based Array in New Mexico.
