The Concord University men's soccer team improved to 1-1-1 on the season
with a 2-0 victory over Bluefield College Thursday night at the East
River Soccer Complex. With the loss, Bluefield's record drops to 1-3-0.
Sophomore Cameron Russell scored the first Mountain Lion goal of the
season early in the second half while senior Richard Vincent added an
insurance goal late in the contest to secure the win for Concord.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Hamilton ended the game with three saves for his
second shutout of the season. Hamilton is now 1-0-1 on the season.
As a team, Concord outshot Bluefield 11-9. Vincent led CU with a
team-high three shots.Russell, sophomore Caleb Bone and junior Sebastian
Escobar all added two shots apiece.
Neither side was able to score in the opening 45 minutes of action, but
Russell broke the 0-0 tie when he scored off of a pass from junior Tyler
Farrar at the 61:56 mark in the second half.
The Mountain Lion defense continued to play strong while the offense put
one more goal on the board when Vincent scored an unassisted ball with
11:29 remaining in the game. Bluefield did not get a shot off in the
final 12 minutes of the second half as Concord cruised to the multi-goal
win.
Concord will head to Buchannon, W. Va. for its first West Virginia
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the season against West
Virginia Wesleyan Saturday at 7 p.m. at Wood Street Park.
