The following is a press release from the Princeton Rays:
Princeton Rays general manager Jim Holland was named as the winner of
the 2012 Appalachian League "Promotional Award of Excellence" as part of
the league's fall meeting on September 11 in Elizabethton, TN.
The
2012 award marks
the third consecutive season he has received this honor. Overall, it
is the fifth time Holland has won this title as he was also honored with
the award as well in 2002, 2005, 2010 and 2011. To date, he is the
only five-time winner of this annual award in Appalachian League
history.
This
honor is given annually to the individual who is determined by a vote
of Appalachian League executives to best promote and publicize his team
while also having an attractive promotional schedule for his team's
games.
"I consider this a great honor for the entire Princeton
Rays organization. You also have to have a great staff, great sponsors,
and great fans to assemble successful promotional events. We're
fortunate to have all three of those ingredients here," said Holland,
who just completed his 21st season as general manager of the Princeton
franchise with the conclusion of the 2012 Appalachian League season.
Holland,
54, is a native of Dunbar, WV, where he was a two-sport letterman at
Dunbar High School. He graduated with a B.A. in Communications from the
University of Charleston (WV) in 1980. In 1998, he was a recipient of
the Princeton Rotary Club's "Service Above Self" award. He is also a
past member of the Board of
Directors for the Princeton-Mercer County Chamber of Commerce.
Probably
the most well-known of his many promotions throughout his career at
Princeton, was in 1992, when Holland originated the idea of the Mercer
Cup, a trophy to be awarded annually to the winner of the
Princeton-Bluefield regular season professional baseball series. In
1993, he was named Appalachian League Executive of the Year for that
season. Since 2001, he has been the Corporate Secretary for the
Appalachian League and is a former member of the league's executive
committee.
