Raleigh County School Lunches Sparks Controversy

BECKELY -

The debate over the new Food and Drug Administration school lunches guidelines continues in Raleigh County.

What would you say if your wife gave you a sandwich with a piece of meat the size of a compact disc?

"I'd give it back to her and tell her to finish the job," Ed Quesenberry, of Daniels said.

And that's what students are doing.. They have been very VOCAL about what's being served-up on their tray at lunch. Children are saying they are coming home HUNGRY.... but just how much is enough? The FDA has their opinion..... but what kind of guidelines are parents using?

The recommended portion of a piece of lunch meat is 1 slice the size of a compact disc and experts say in a nation were everything is super sized, people are expecting larger portions to get the most bang for their buck.

"People want a decent sized meal they want to feel like they are getting value for their dollar and if they were to get what their actual portion size may be the might feel cheated or ripped off," Rich Packard, a Registered Dietitian said.

Packard said because of generous portions being served it causes people to have greater expectations. And inside of our schools, students are EXPECTING more food and familiar foods.

Packard said the new guidelines are abruptly introducing unfamiliar foods and there is nothing the schools can do.

"I think schools have to follow the guidelines and I think the guidelines are good but many people feel like this is a really big change," Packard said.

And this is just phase 1, of a 10-year school lunch plans. As lunch time criteria continues to evolve, parents are reminded they can always send their students to school with a packed meal.
