Two Mines in Fayette County to be Idled by Alpha Natural Resources

On Tuesday, Sept. 18, Alpha Natural Resources announced that they would be reducing their coal production by 16 million tons.

The announcement included the immediate idling of 8 mines in West Virginia, Virginia and the lay off of 400 people.  A spokesperson for Alpha said about 270 people were offered a reassignment either replacing outside contractors or filling existing vacancies. 

People at all the affected were briefed on their pay and benefits continuation package on Tuesday, Sept. 18

Here is a list of the mines being idled in Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, by county and nearest town:


  • · Twin Star surface mine, near Hurley, VA – Buchanan County
  • · Guest Mountain deep mine #8, near Appalachia, VA – Wise County
  • · Guest Mountain deep Mine #9, near Appalachia, VA – Wise County

West Virginia

  • · Alloy deep mine, near Alloy, WV- Fayette County
  • · Alloy surface mine, near Boomer, WV – Fayette County
  • · Premium highwall mine, near Gilbert, WV – Mingo County
  • · White Flame surface mine, near Varney, WV – Mingo County


  • · Dora # 8 deep mine—Jefferson County, Pa. Most Dora employees will be offered an opportunity to transfer elsewhere once they complete the idling process.

Alpha said they will continue to have a major presence in the states. According to a release by the company, in 2011 ANR had 8,000 employees and 91 operations in West Virginia; 2,200 employees and 35 operations in Virginia; and 2,000 employees and 31 operations in Pa.
