BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -
Detectives with the Bluefield Police Department are investigating a murder that took place on Monday, Oct. 1.
Donald Adams, 54, of Bluefield, WV is the suspect in a murder case that began at 11:40 p.m. on Burton Street in Bluefield, WV. Police tell 59News that Adams shot John Douglas Watkins, 79, of Bluefield and his wife Monica Watkins. John Watkins was killed, Monica Watkins was taken to a Roanoke hospital where she was in surgery at around 12 p.m.
Investigators said that Adams knew the couple and that they had assisted him financially in the past. According to police there was some money missing from the home and Adams may have shown up to rob them.
Adams was arrested on Bluefield Ave. at around 5 a.m. Tuesday. Police said that he ran off when they found him and they had to run after him.
Adams is expected to be charged with murder, but other charges could be added. Adams was set to be arraigned this afternoon.
