BLUEFIELD -

A Mercer County murder suspect, found dead in his holding cell at the Bluefield Police department.

Now everyone is wondering.. How could this have happened?

If you remember, Donald Adams was arrested on Tuesday, for the murder of John Watkins.... and injuring his wife Monica Watkins...who still remains in critical condition.

This is where things got even MORE VIOLENT, yesterday, State Troopers confirmed that Adams hanged himself with shoelaces while in the holding facility at the Bluefield Police Department.

And now state police are investigating how this could have happened.

"But my job is to make sure that no other inmate had a hand in this or there was any foul play by anyone else in the police department," Cpl A.P. Christian, West Virginia State Police said.

State police said it will take several weeks before they finish their investigation. Now we did ask the Chief of Police over here in Bluefield and he said the case was in the hands of state troopers and he's not allowed to comment.

Though police wouldn't comment, folks in the community we spoke with said he was a familiar face and they never thought he could be responsible for such violence.

"Somebody who was in the frame of mind that Adams was in, if there wasn't any forewarning there was no way of telling that he really meant to do that," Cpl A.P. Christian, West Virginia State Police said.
