A Tazewell County native and Virginia State Trooper was hit by an SUV while directing traffic and killed.

Officials said Saturday afternoon Trooper Andrew D. Fox, was working on special assignment at the State Fair when he was struck by an SUV.

The 27-year-old was directing traffic when he was hit by a Jeep Cherokee. Fox was wearing reflective gear at the time.

Troopers and other bystanders ran to the SUV and lifted the vehicle from him as two troopers began performing first aid and CPR.  Fox was rushed to VCU Medical Center where he later died.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, and the crash is still under investigation. Trooper Fox was a Tazewell County native according to reports.

Fox had served with the Virginia State Police for five years. He is survived by his wife.
