Greenbrier buys historic W.Va. course

CHARLESTON (AP) -

The Greenbrier resort is buying one of the nation's oldest golf courses that failed to sell at auction over the summer.

Greenbrier owner Jim Justice confirmed the purchase of Oakhurst Links to The Associated Press on Friday.

Oakhurst Links was built in 1884 and is a few miles north of The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs.

Lewis Keller had owned the course since 1959. Keller had struggled for years to find a buyer. The winning bid from a July 28 auction fell through and a heartbroken Keller feared a bank would foreclose on the property - until Justice came along.

Keller declined to disclose the purchase price but says it was more than the $410,000 that was bid at auction.

Oakhurst is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
