Upgraded W.Va. Route 9 segment to open Wednesday

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) -

Motorists soon will be able to drive from Charles Town to the Virginia border on a new four-lane segment of W.Va. Route 9.

The upgraded highway segment is scheduled to open Wednesday. It runs about 5 miles.

The Herald-Mail (http://bit.ly/Zu3auz ) of Hagerstown, Md., says the segment originally was set to open Nov. 2 but state officials delayed the opening due to Superstorm Sandy.

The project is part of an upgrade of Route 9 in the Eastern Panhandle. It includes a new 1,650-foot-long bridge spanning the Shenandoah River.

The original two-lane route was built in the 1930s.
