Changes on horizon for W.Va. college savings plan

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -

Changes are in the works for West Virginia's SMART529 Direct Plan college savings program.

Treasurer John Perdue says the changes will make it easier for parents and grandparents to save for their children's or grandchildren's college education.

Investments primarily will be made in Vanguard funds. Perdue says he expects this change to make the plan 1 of the lowest-cost in the nation.

Another change is the elimination of a minimum contribution requirement.

Perdue and Hartford officials will announce details Wednesday at a news conference in Charleston.
