Hunters across Southern West Virginia were up with the sun Monday morning for the start of deer season.

Joshua Sharp and his friend headed to Bull Falls at 4 a.m., locked, loaded, and ready to roll.

"There a bunch of cars down there on the field. So we decided to hike up the mountain to be alone," said Sharp.

The decision to separate from the pack ended up being the right one.

"All their shots ended up chasing them over. So it was only an hour before we got one," added Sharp.

According to Flat Top Arms owner Diana Wood, Sharp isn't the only one who went home with a prize buck Monday.

Thanks to last year's generous mast crop, Wood is predicting a better than expected season for hunters.

"Everybody that's been in has indicated there's a lot of deer out there. When you pass up a smaller buck to go for a larger back, that's usually a good indication there's a lot out there," added Wood.
