A home in Raleigh County got firefighters out of bed early this morning. Now investigators comb through the ashes to find out just what happened to leave one woman dead among the clouds of smoke.
"Last night when they called me and I came over, my concern was ... did everybody get out," said homeowner Jarvis Wilson.
Not everyone did get out, and investigators are still working tirelessly to find out if any bodies are still in the home. When asked if there could be more than just the woman's body, inside, investigators said they haven't ruled anything out.
"Now we cannot confirm or deny that. This is an ongoing investigation ... there's still deep-seeded pockets of smoldering fire in the structure. Those have to be rendered safe before we can place our people in there accordingly to do the work," said West Virginia State Fire Marshall Shawn Alderman.
What investigators work to determine now is, what caused the deadly fire.
"If we find data elements that are specific to the fire scene to help us determine an origin and cause then its going to take longer. But we don't get in a hurry. We aren't paid to be in a hurry. We are paid to do it right," said Alderman.
A neighbor tells 59News that a man and woman lived in the home with their three kids, two girls and one boy. The couple rented from homeowner Jarvis Wilson.
Wilson said he knew the man, and he was very sad to hear about what happened.
"The individual that I rented the house to, I worked with him for several years, and that was one of the reasons why I didn't hesitate to rent to him. Like I said in the beginning, you can replace a house but I cant replace a life. This is a tragedy, this is a tragedy," said Wilson.
