Wrong Bus Schedule Sends First Grader Walking Down Dangerous Road

STANAFORD -

A parents worst nightmare. A first grader panicking.

No one at the bus stop after his bus drops him off 30 minutes early - - forcing him to walk along a busy road.

It is a DAY parents of 7-year old Ryan Suggs say they will NEVER forget. They said SOMEONE ALWAYS greets their 1st grader when he steps off the bus.

But that was NOT the case on November 16th when they said his bus was dispatched 30 minutes AHEAD of schedule.

"The bus driver willing put them off on the streets on the streets 30 minutes early and the problem is we weren't there because it was 30 minutes early," James Suggs, Ryan's father said.

After knocking on his grandparents door and seeking out trusted neighbors, still finding no one home, Ryan could only think one thing.... FIND MOMMY.

Ryan set off down Ragland Road and this is the view a small child would have.

Shortly after Ryan took off, another bus driver found the child, got him off this busy road and took Ryan to his mother's office.

59 News Reporter Lauren Hensley asked, "what would you do if you saw that bus driver who picked up your son?"

"I would hug him," Suggs said.

In the short time our news crew was on scene at Ragland Road, about a dozen cars flew past the speed limit and the shoulder is very narrow, making this walk very dangerous for a 7-year old. Our crews caught up with Raleigh County Superintendent to ask for their response.

"It was a system break down and our focus in moving forward it to make sure this never happens again and our focus is to revisit what expectations are and improving communication," Jim Brown, Raleigh County Superintendent said.
