CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -

Pets across West Virginia weren't forgotten during Superstorm Sandy.

In a news release Wednesday, the state Department of Agriculture's Homeland Security Section says the storm was the first time it transported emergency rations of pet food along with the meals-ready-to-eat for their human owners.

Agriculture Commissioner Gus Douglass said the department needed to consider companion animals in disaster plans after previous storms illustrated people's loyalty to their pets.

Officials say about 25 tons of pet food was donated to West Virginia and most of it was delivered to local emergency operations center for use at emergency shelters and to be delivered to snowed-in West Virginians with pets. Numerous other state and federal agencies, as well as volunteer groups helped collect the food, coordinate donations and make deliveries.
