WASHINGTON, D.C. -

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is accepting applications for grants to support public and fire safety opportunities.

The award is funded under FEMA's fiscal year 2012 Fire Prevention and Safety Grant Program. The grants are available to local fire departments to support projects related to activities designed to reach high-risk target groups and mitigate the incidences of death and injuries caused by fire and fire-related hazards, as well as projects aimed at improving firefighter safety, health and wellness through research and development.

Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., is the ranking Democrat on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which has jurisdiction over FEMA.

"We cannot overstate the importance of raising the public's awareness of fire prevention measures and improving firefighter safety to reduce fatalities and injuries caused by fire and fire-related hazards every year," Rahall said in a statement. "The meaning of these words becomes more profound, barely describing the commitment made every day by our firefighters, who risk their own well-being each time they answer an emergency call."

FEMA will begin accepting grant applications Dec. 17. Applications are due 5 p.m. Jan. 18. Materials and guides are available at fema.gov/firegrants.
