Damien Tunstalle Scores 25, Concord Defeats WV State 68-62

Led by a career-high 25 points from senior forward Damien Tunstalle, the Concord University men's basketball team went on the road to defeat West Virginia State University 68-62 Thursday night in West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

The win improves Concord's record to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the WVIAC. The Yellow Jackets fell to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Tunstalle scored his points on 8-for-19 from the field, including a 5-for-12 performance from three point range, while also going a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line. He also added five rebounds two assists and one steal to his stat line.

Sophomore forward Jordan Davis just missed a double-double with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Fellow sophomore Mike Boyd passed out seven assists, scored six points and grabbed four rebounds from the point guard position.

Sophomore guard Thomas Brown, who was made his third consecutive start, was one of three players, along with senior guard Eric Bailey and sophomore guard Paul Byrd to score five points. Bailey and Brown combined to register 10 rebounds (six for Bailey and four for Byrd).

Senior forward Gentry Shrewsbury battled down low and came away with a season-high seven rebounds.

Concord outshot the Yellow Jackets from field goal (41.1 percent - 37.5 percent). The Mountain Lions also dominated at the foul line shooting 63.6 percent to West Virginia State's 57.9 percent. The Mountain Lions also held advantages in points off of turnovers (20-19),

CU fell behind to WVSU within the first few minutes, but fought to tie the contest at 9-9 with 16:50 left in the first half in a period that featured four ties and seven lead changes. Concord led by as many as 11 points (32-21) in the opening 20 minutes before a West Virginia State run was capped off by a three-pointer from Kendrick Ward at the buzzer to make it a 37-37 game heading into the locker room.

Concord controlled the second half, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 31-25 in the final 20 minutes of play en route to the 68-62 victory. Concord has now won four consecutive games against West Virginia State.

Concord will host West Virginia University Institute Technology in a non-conference match-up on December 3rd. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Carter Center.
