RALEIGH COUNTY -

It seems like common sense, just keep your car door locked and you'll be safe from intruders. But with still so many people get broken, it's not just unlocked doors that make vehicles a target. Beckley policeman explains storing your valuables and keeping them out of plain sight is helpful.

"A good place to store stuff, your glove box, perhaps under your seat. Whatever your options are. your trunk is also a good place to store stuff," said Will Pannell Beckley Policeman.

While the most common precautionary steps are to keep the doors locked and valuables unseen, one family takes these steps even further.

They have installed a full security system surrounding their house. They also have lights set up around the house and drive way. Just little things can save families from big crimes.

Kim Norris of Raleigh County advises everyone to always stay on guard. She believes car break-ins can happen anywhere and anytime.

"At this point in time of year they want to know where they can break in, when they can break in. They'll break in as easily at your home as they would out in public," said Kim Norris.

When out on vacation this holiday season... There's a few things to keep in mind.

"When you're out of town make sure someone checks on your house, make sure someone picks up your mail. Make sure someone picks up your newspaper. Just make it look like you're home," said Beckley Police Detective Jeff Shumate

He also advises to park your vehicle in an area that's well lit.

"When people commit crimes the one big thing is they want to conceal their identity. So if you take certain steps to make it easy to identify those people, you are less likely to be a victim."
