A $476,000 federal grant will help support a program to expand mental health care treatment for three groups considered at risk in West Virginia - children, active-duty service members and military veterans.
West Virginia University social work professor Carrie Rishel will use the grant to create the Integrated Behavioral Health Training Program. It's aimed at tackling the state's shortage of mental and behavioral health providers.
The grant will support training for 25 WVU graduate students over three years, with a focus on rural delivery of services.
The School of Social Work will offer the program to master's candidates in Morgantown, Charleston, Beckley, Keyser, Wheeling and Martinsburg.
The grant supports speakers and clinical training. It also provides stipends for students to travel and serve in rural areas with great needs.
