The Mountaineer Maniacs at West Virginia University
organized a fundraiser for cancer research during the Dec. 8 men's basketball
game against Virginia Tech to as part of Jimmy V Week.
The Mountaineer Maniacs will donate 10 cents to cancer
research for every WVU student who attends the game. The donations all will be
given to the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
"Saturday's game opens a new chapter with our old rival
Virginia Tech," Mountaineer Maniacs Director Chris Northrup said in a news
release. "The game features two great teams, and we hope that this opportunity
will help to pack the Coliseum.
"Come out to see a great game between two rivals and help
support cancer research."
The money raised by the Mountaineer Maniacs will be matched
by WVU's Student Government Association.
WVU's men's basketball coach Bob Huggins started the Norma
Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center
fund in honor of his late mother who died of cancer.
"Nick Valvano, who heads up the V Foundation, told me that
we have a great cancer center," Huggins said in a news release. "He said he did
research, and that we're doing good things, which made me feel so much better
about what we do.
"We started this at the Mary Babb Cancer Research Center,
because my mom grew up on Eighth Street in Morgantown, and my dad grew up in
Dug Hill."
Huggins said the endowment is close to approaching $1
million.
