The West Virginia Board of Education has a new member.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced Dec. 10 he has appointed former Greenbrier County Delegate Thomas Campbell to the board. Campbell will replace Lowell Johnson, whose term expired Nov. 4. Campbell's appointment is effective immediately.
Tomblin said he thinks Campbell will be an asset to the board.
"The education of your young people is essential to West Virginia's future and remains one of my top priorities," Tomblin said. "I've worked with Tom for many years, and I'm pleased he will be joining the state Board of Education. I am confident with his vast knowledge and experience Tom will be a tremendous asset to our state board."
Campbell, a Democrat, was first elected to the House of Delegates in 1996 and retired this year. During his time in the House of Delegates, Campbell served as chairman of the House Education Committee from 2005 to 2006 and also served on the House Finance Committee's education subcommittee. Campbell currently represents West Virginia on the Southern Regional Education Board and is a 15-year veteran of the Read Aloud West Virginia program at Ronceverte Elementary School.
He graduated from West Virginia University in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He lives in Lewisburg with his wife, the Rev. Dr. Susan Sharp Campbell.
